Port Wakefield

Back in its heyday Port Wakefield was one of the busiest shipping ports in South Australia. Exporting valuable copper, mined from Burra, as well as wheat, barely and other commodities of the time.

This town is bursting at the seams with South Australian history. There's plenty to see and do...

  • Explore the town's colonial history and see the many stone settlement buildings, murals and monuments including a tribute to Sir Jack Brabham, the Shipping Co and Aboriginal culture on the Port Wakefield Historical Walk and at the Courthouse Museum
  • Stop for a bite to eat at one of the local bakeries on Highway One or at the boutique café Salt of the Earth
  • Visit the local wharf to watch boats launch into the Gulf of St Vincent where the Wakefield River meets the sea
  • Stroll along the mangrove trails to Pelican Bay which offers excellent access to the habitat of Australia’s most important migratory birds sites
